6 children thrown from bed of pickup truck in rollover crash in Escambia County

Eight people — including six children — were critically injured in a pickup truck crash Sunday afternoon in Escambia County.

It happened around 2:45 p.m. on O.C. Phillips Road off Highway 97A.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a 37-year-old Walnut Hill woman was driving when she lost control of the pickup truck and collided with the embankment on the shoulder of the roadway. The truck overturned and came to a rest on its side.

Six Walnut Hill children — girls ages 3,4,8,11 and boys ages 10 and 14 — were riding in the bed of the pickup truck when the crash happened, according to NorthEscambia.com.

All six children, as well as the driver and her passenger — a 47-year-old Walnut Hill woman — were all critically injured and hospitalized as trauma alerts.

An investigation is ongoing.
