The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office and several agencies are responding to a hazmat situation in the area of N. Industrial Loop in LaBelle Wednesday evening.
According to HCSO, authorities are investigating a suspicious element that has caused people and law enforcement in the area to become sick.
Earlier on Wednesday, deputies investigated reports of stolen vehicles. At around 4 p.m., deputies arrived in the 300 block of N Industrial Loop, where they saw a man unconscious in a mobile home that was reported stolen.
First responders entered the home to help the man. He was taken into custody for questioning, HCSO said.
Shortly after, the first responders reported feeling sick. Twenty of them were reportedly exposed and eight were hospitalized with symptoms. No residents were harmed.
LaBelle Fire, LaBelle EMS, Fort Myers Hazmat Team, Clewiston Police Department, Homeland Security, Collier County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Agency are currently investigating.
N. Industrial Loop Road off of SR-29 is completely blocked off at this time, HCSO said.
