Walton County Fire Rescue fights early morning fire at Grady Brown Park

A structure fire broke out early Monday morning at Grady Brown Park in Freeport, prompting a swift response from Walton County Fire Rescue (WCFR) and Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

According to officials, a passerby reported seeing flames coming from the park’s bathroom facility around 3:23 a.m. The individual contacted 911 after spotting fire coming from the back door of the structure while driving through the area.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes to find the building fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters quickly began suppression efforts and were able to contain the blaze.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire. Officials later determined the fire was accidental, likely caused by overheating in the building’s server room.

“This could have been much worse if not for the quick response of our crews and the person who made the call,” said Fire Chief Austin Pugh. “We train for moments like this, and our team executed exactly as they should.”

Walton County Fire Rescue personnel remained on site until 8:14 a.m. as they completed extinguishing efforts and ensured the area was safe. The park’s restroom facility sustained significant damage.

Officials have not yet announced a timeline for repairs or reopening of the affected area.
