Tampa man arrested after striking patrol vehicle, fleeing scene: HCSO

A man was arrested on Saturday after he struck an unmarked patrol vehicle during a traffic stop and fled the scene, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

At 301 a.m., a deputy was conducting a traffic stop on Adamo Drive near Orient Road.

The deputy reported he was inside his patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated when a vehicle traveling east struck the driver’s side.

The driver then continued east for approximately one mile before the deputy was able to conduct a traffic stop.

According to the deputy, the driver, 49-year-old AW, showed signs of impairment.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested W and charged him with leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, driving under the influence, and refusal to submit to testing.

No one was injured in the crash, and both vehicles sustained only minor damages.

“This incident is a reminder of how dangerous the roadside can be for our deputies,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Florida’s Move Over Law exists to protect law enforcement, first responders, and roadside workers. When drivers fail to slow down, move over, or choose to drive impaired, lives are put at risk.”

Drivers are required by Florida’s Move Over Law to move over to the next lane when approaching emergency vehicles stopped on the roadside
