E-bike battery fire prompts safety reminders from Estero Fire Rescue

E-bike battery fire prompts safety reminders from Estero Fire Rescue

Estero firefighters responded to a call for a structure fire on Thursday and discovered that an e-bike had caught fire.

San Carlos Park Fire Protection & Rescue Service District assisted Estero crews at the scene. Fire crews determined that the e-bike’s battery had overheated and begun sparking, causing the fire.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames.

The Estero Fire Rescue said that the incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of lithium-ion batteries, which power many everyday devices, including e-bikes, scooters, phones, laptops and more.

EFR said that lithium-ion batteries can experience a dangerous condition called thermal runaway, where the battery’s temperature rapidly increases, leading to a fire.

To help reduce the risk of fires, EFR recommends the following:

  • “Use the charger designed for your device and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Don’t use batteries or chargers that are damaged or show signs of overheating.
  • Avoid charging batteries near exits or where they could block your way out.
  • Keep batteries away from extreme heat and direct sunlight.
  • Never ignore signs of a battery problem, such as swelling, unusual heat, leaking, odors, or hissing sounds.
  • If a battery begins smoking or catches fire, get outside and call 911.
  • Most importantly, call 911 as soon as you discover a fire or emergency.”
