A Leesburg man was arrested for battery after pushing down his elderly stepfather, leaving him with a severe hip injury.
Officers responded to an undisclosed Leesburg gas station for a battery involving 58-year-old H and his 71-year-old stepfather at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department
The manager advised that H was at the counter paying for things when the stepfather entered the store. The two talked until the stepfather approached H from the left. H then shoved the stepfather once, and he stayed upright. The second time, he fell backward over a crate of bottles and onto the ground, the report said.
The manager told H to leave the store immediately, and he drove away eastbound. He rushed over to the stepfather, who had severe hip pain and needed EMS. He was ultimately transported to UF Health Leesburg Hospital, located at 600 E Dixie Ave., where medical staff determined he would need surgery for the severity of the injury, the report said.
H’s mother was in the store at the time of the incident, but she did not see it. She stated H and his stepfather frequently got into altercations, but they were “always just playing.” They had not gotten along since she had been with the stepfather for the past 10 years, the report said.
Law enforcement later drove to H’s address, where he went inside before speaking to an officer. An unknown female came outside to greet the officers and to tell H they were there. H then came back outside and stated he knew he would be arrested for what happened, the report said.
A check of his criminal history showed a prior battery charge in 1994, but there was no conviction, the report said.
H was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery on person 65 years of age or older and booked at the Lake County Jail. He was released after posting $5,000 bond.
