One person was killed, and another was injured when police say a man suspected of street racing slammed into their vehicle on Dale Mabry Highway on Monday morning.

According to the Tampa Police Department, 22-year-old Andy Moya Robaina was driving a 2011 BMW 335i at a high rate of speed southbound on Dale Mabry Highway shortly before 10:30 a.m.

Witnesses told police that Robaina appeared to be racing a dark-colored vehicle when he slammed into a 2015 Nissan Versa that tried to cross N. Dale Mabry Highway near W. South Ave.

Post-impact, police say Robaina’s car was redirected and came to a stop on the northbound lanes of Dale Mabry Highway.

The passenger of the Versa, a woman in her early 60s, was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries and later passed away. The driver of the Versa, a man in his early to mid-70s, is listed as stable at the hospital.

Robaina, who police say was not injured in the crash, stayed at the scene and was charged with one count of felony vehicular homicide and one misdemeanor count of unlawful racing on a highway.

Police say the vehicle Robaina was racing did not stop or return to the scene.

According to investigators, moments before the crash, the driver of that vehicle narrowly missed hitting the Versa and continued southbound on Dale Mabry Highway. Investigators are working to identify the driver of that vehicle.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Tampa Police Department’s non-emergency number at 813-231-6130 or submit an anonymous tip via Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 800-873-8477 or via Tip411.

The northbound and southbound lanes of Dale Mabry Highway were closed between W. Hillsborough Avenue and W. MLK Boulevard while police investigated, but the road has since reopened.
