Argument between two brothers leads to deadly shooting on New Year’s Eve

Family members and neighbors are dealing with an incident on New Year’s Eve. Levy County officials say a violent argument between two brothers resulted in one of them being killed.

New Year’s Eve is usually a day of excitement as people look forward to starting a new year; however, for J M, his life ended before he could welcome the new year.

Levy County sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call about a shooting. Upon arrival, they found 50-year-old J M dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Investigators have identified the shooter as his younger brother, 33-year-old M M.

“This was quite a shock because we never see anything like this on our street or in this neighborhood,” said W R, who lives across the street from the Ms. He never imagined that such violence could occur so close to home. While R said that M M had some issues, he never thought it would lead to murder.

“There was something wrong upstairs, but I never thought anything like this might happen,” R added.

S S, another neighbor who has known the M family for some time, expressed her disbelief at the shooting. “He should have thought of his parents and how this would affect them,” S said.

Lieutenant Scott Tummond of the Levy County Sheriff’s Office noted incidents like this are not uncommon, especially during the holiday season when families gather.

“We see an increase in domestic violence incidents during the holiday season as families come together and old problems resurface, leading to arguments,” T added.

Levy County officials state that the argument was fueled by meth, but the investigation is ongoing. M M is being charged with murder and is currently being held at the Levy County Detention Center.
