Marion County firefighters battled a structure fire on Thursday evening that spread into the woods around it.
According to Marion County Fire Rescue crews, a building caught fire near Southeast 127th Lane in Belleview just before 8 p.m.
Smoke was heavy and flames were high when firefighters arrived at the building. The blaze was quickly spreading into the surrounding area.
The concrete structure stored construction materials which posed risks for responding firefighters. As the fire grew, the concrete blocks holding up the building began to collapse.
Neighbors in the area say it was an old farm in that area.
“I know that it was a barn. A very large barn, kind of an H shape. There used to be a farm back there. They sold the property quite a few years ago and then the developer bought it, and they’re starting to put homes back there,” said longtime resident BA.
Neighbors believe it could’ve been the barn that caught fire.
“Very black smoke. That would indicate that there was probably items in the barn. Could’ve been tires, fuel, who knows what was in there, it’s been there for years,” A said.
It took crews about an hour to bring the blaze under control. No one was hurt in the fire.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office will investigate the cause of the fire.
