A nighttime drive ended dramatically on Wednesday when a car veered off 37th Street Southwest and plunged into a canal.
Surveillance footage captured the crash, and landscapers working nearby witnessed the aftermath.
“They were speaking with my husband on the phone when they heard the car— like a splash,” said Lisette Colon, a resident of the area. “They contacted my husband, and then my husband called [me].”
She immediately called 911. Surveillance video caught the driver yelling in disbelief from the car.
“He was screaming, having a bit of a temper tantrum,” Colon said. “He was kind of upset, but of course, his car fell in.”
Lee County deputies reported the driver hit a sign before careening into the ditch. Despite the chaos, the car sustained only minor damage and was later towed.
This marks the third incident this month of cars plunging into canals in Lehigh Acres.
On Dec. 5, another crash occurred along Williams Avenue near Lee Boulevard, sending one person to the hospital. Earlier, on Nov. 19, a vehicle drove into a canal along Centennial Boulevard, but no injuries were reported in that case.
Longtime residents are growing concerned about road safety in the area.
“Just be careful,” Colon said. “We have a lot of canals. Just take your time driving.”
