A blown transformer sparked a fire Wednesday morning in Green Cove Springs, shutting down one road and affecting multiple traffic lights on busy US 17. The city said power was restored around 7 a.m., explaining that a rodent had chewed into a wire, which caused the fire. Two women suffered critical injuries Wednesday morning when they were fired at by an unknown shooter while driving through Springfield, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. JSO, which did not issue an alert about the shooting at the time, said officers responded at 6:18 a.m. to West 16th Street, west of North Main Street, because of a reported shooting.
