City of Crestview suffers heavy damage during overnight storms

The City of Crestview saw a lot of damage during Friday morning’s storms.

WEAR News found trees and power lines down on Bower Road. There are similar scenes in many parts of the city.

A Tom Thumb gas station was torn apart, while a Cumberland Farms gas station suffered damage as well.

The city says there were 1,200 calls for power outages overnight into the morning. Crews are now working to restore power.

The city adds there were two cases where people were trapped inside their homes.

The city is urging people to stay away from down power lines and only call 911 if it’s an emergency.

“To the best of my knowledge no one has been injured. We’re excited about that,” City Manager Tim Bolduc said. “If a tree is down, if you don’t know there’s power lines in it, avoid it. That’s the most dangerous part. Especially as we bring power back up. So a power line that may not have had power on it, when power comes up may get charged. Don’t touch things you don’t know and let the professionals do the clearing.”

Schools and city offices are closed for the day. A majority of city employees are out doing damage assessments.

The city could declare a state of emergency to give them access to funding to assist with damage cleanup.
