The mother of a 4-year-old girl was arrested Monday and accused of aggravated child neglect after the child accidentally shot herself last week.
According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the scene at 2410 Clover Ave. in Middleburg on Wednesday.
The preliminary investigation by CCSO detectives revealed that the child accessed the parent’s handgun and accidentally discharged it.
After an in-depth investigation with the State Attorney’s Office and the Department of Children and Families, CCSO investigators determined there was sufficient evidence to support the arrest of the child’s mother.
The mother was safely taken into custody and held on a bond of $50,000.
The 4-year-old child is safe and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
