Deputies: Escambia County traffic stop for reported stolen vehicle escalates to shooting

A traffic stop turned into an officer-involved shooting on Tuesday night.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said as deputies tried to pull over a driver in a reported stolen vehicle around 10 p.m. at Aquamarine and Kentucky Drive, they took off.

Deputies say they pursued the suspect, using a PIT maneuver to forcibly stop them. The suspect had a handgun on them and began shooting at deputies from within and then outside of the vehicle.

According to deputies, they shot back at the suspect. The suspect was shot and taken to the hospital. No deputies were injured.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was on scene. The officer-involved shooting is under investigation.

This a developing story.
