A family’s dog died after a fire erupted Sunday night inside their home in Weston, first responders confirmed to Local 10 News.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane said the fire was reported shortly after 9 p.m. in the 1600 block of Winterberry Lane.
According to Kane, firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy black smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the two-story, mid-block home.
He said several teams of firefighters entered the home, with one team fighting the fire on the second floor, another targeting the blaze on the first floor and a third team searching the home for any potential victims.
Kane said it appears the fire started on the bottom level.
According to Kane, the residents weren’t home when the fire started, but their dog was found dead inside the house.
Kane said it took about 35 firefighters around 30 minutes to extinguish the flames.
While no civilians were injured, one firefighter sustained a knee injury and was taken to a nearby hospital, Kane said.
The Red Cross is now assisting the family of four who lives at the home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
