Erica Ramirez, owner of Los Eloteros in Immokalee, was busy preparing food for customers when she was met with a drove of rain, wind and hail Thursday afternoon.
“We had no idea that was going to come out to be a thunderstorm,” Ramirez said. “It was scary. It was a scary thing. It was a scary moment.”
Ramirez said she had to leave her stand behind as storms brushed through the area close to 1 p.m.
“There were some people sitting in their vehicles that didn’t want, they didn’t come out. They were scared to come out,” Ramirez said.
After the storm, she discovered a collapsed tent covering her grill area, products on the ground, and wet food. Several other vendors at the market saw worse damage.
That’s when Ramirez rode around her community to find even more devastation.
“There are trees that are in the middle of the road. Imagine a car going down that road,” Ramirez said.
She found huge tree branches on the ground along Main Street and a downed power pole along Immokalee Drive.
The National Weather Service in Miami surveyed damage from the storm. It confirmed a downburst with straight-line winds of 60-70 mph caused the damage.
A downburst occurs when strong winds descend and diverge beneath the storm and result in an outward burst.
Ramirez said she will have to close her business while she makes repairs, but she is not giving up on hope.
“We just all have to be together. We have to reunite as one,” she said.
