Drones fall from sky during holiday show; Florida boy undergoes open heart surgery after getting hit

A young boy was rushed to the hospital Saturday night after multiple drones unexpectedly fell from the sky during downtown Orlando’s holiday drone show.

The 7-year-old boy’s mother, A E, told NBC affiliate WESH that she and her family were watching the show at Lake Eola when one of the falling drones struck her son in the chest.

“Everyone’s natural instinct was to duck and scatter, and before we realized it, my daughter found my son on the floor unconscious,” E told WESH. “He had blood coming out of his face.”

She said Sunday that her son was undergoing open heart surgery due to his injury. There was no further word on his condition.

“This should not have happened, and no family should be going through this,” E said. “We were trying to watch a show and have a good time.”

As of Sunday, it was still unclear what caused the drones to malfunction. The drones appeared to be lining up to create a holiday-themed design when they started dropping from the sky.

Videos circulating on social media captured the moment as several drones crashed into the crowd. However, no other injuries were reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said Sunday it was opening an investigation into the incident.

According to the FAA, “Drone arrays and light shows are subject to FAA regulation. Typically, these events require a waiver to the regulation that prohibits operating more than one drone at a time. We thoroughly review each drone show application to make sure the flying public and people on the ground will be safe.”
