Family displaced after blaze engulfs home in Panama City

Investigators say the fire began due to an electrical short in the attic, and the two pets that were unaccounted for did not escape.

This morning a family is left to find another place to live after their home erupted in flames in Panama City.

It happened around 8:45 Monday morning on James Avenue in Millville. When Panama City firefighters arrived, flames and smoke were billowing out of the home.

According to officials, everyone made it out safely but two pets are still unaccounted for. There were several animals inside the home, including a litter of kittens. Firefighters gave them oxygen to help them breathe.

Division Chief Howard Demro says the home is a total loss. The Red Cross is ready to assist.

Multiple investigators were on the scene to try to determine exactly what happened. However, a family member there said it most likely started due to a space heater.
