The site of Wednesday morning’s crash in Pace is near a controversial intersection WEAR News reported about on Monday.
Nearby residents say a commercially owned business potentially moving in — Grover’s Fingers and Wings — will make traffic worse.
Traffic was blocked for hours Wednesday morning on Quintette Road at Tunnel Road after the deadly crash.
The scene of the crash is directly in front of the potential Grover’s property.
“Safety I think is the biggest concern here at the intersection,” said J S, who lives on Tunnel Road.
“We’re not against Grover’s. Grover’s kept me alive eating there in college,” he added. “…It is just not made for a business. If their little location in Pensacola is bringing in 400 people a day, that thing will bring in 1,000 a day. The owner said it himself, people from all over the county is going to come there — and we just don’t need any more traffic than what’s already there, as you can see already.”
S has lived on Tunnel Road for several years now and says the county has previously voted against the property for commercial rezoning with a previous owner. WEAR News is waiting on those details from the county.
S has led the charge on social media in support of keeping the property residential.
He says ideas have been discussed on ways to improve the intersection.
If the infrastructure improved, would nearby residents approve of a business coming in? S said it would be a tough sell.
“A light would definitely help everything,” S said. “I still think you’ve got a lot of development because their plans show entry on Tunnel, not Quintette. If they add a turn lane and stuff, maybe they could add it to Grover’s if it’s there.”
“I just don’t think it was a good business decision on their part and not built to hold the extra traffic,” he added.
