A road ranger was killed early New Year’s Day in a multi-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 95 at Hollywood Boulevard in Broward County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, WPLG reported.
The crash, reported at 3:37 a.m., involved five vehicles, including two fully marked FHP patrol cars and a road ranger service truck, according to FHP spokesperson Lt. Indiana Miranda.
Authorities identified the victim as a 28-year-old Hispanic man from Pembroke Pines. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The incident began when a 2012 white BMW X6, driven by a 45-year-old woman from Miami, collided with the rear of a 2006 Honda Accord in a general lane of the I-95.
Investigators said the BMW then veered into the express lane, striking a concrete wall before colliding with the road ranger’s service truck.
They also confirmed impact caused a chain reaction involving two marked FHP Dodge Charger patrol vehicles. The road ranger, who was standing between the patrol cars, was struck and fatally killed, authorities confirmed.
Miranda said the drivers of the FHP vehicles, both troopers from Davie, suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Honda Accord, a 28-year-old man from Hollywood, also sustained minor injuries.
FHP officials confirmed the road ranger’s vehicle had its amber and red emergency lights activated at the time of the crash. The FHP patrol cars were also stopped with emergency lights on while attending to an earlier motor vehicle crash.
Southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down for nearly three hours Wednesday morning just before Pembroke Road, leading to significant delays for commuters in Hollywood.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
