An explosion at a Florida Power & Light (FPL) facility in Indiantown on Thursday.

Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR) said firefighters responded to a structure fire at the FPL facility at 21900 SW Warfield Boulevard. When crews arrived they found smoke coming from a turbine on the grounds.

Fire rescue said the smoke stopped and two FPL workers went to fix the turbine. However, at some point, an explosion occurred and the two workers were injured.

An MCFR firefighter went to pull the two workers to safety and suffered minor injuries in the process, according to the news release.

FPL acknowledged the incident and affirmed there would be no impact to consumers

We are aware of the serious incident Thursday night at FPL’s power plant in Indiantown that injured two of our employees. We are working closely with first responders in Martin County and are unable to provide additional information,” FPL stated in a release.

One of the FPL workers suffered serious injuries from the incident and was airlifted to a Jackson Memorial Hospital’s burn center in Miami, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) said. The other worker sustained minor injuries and was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, and the firefighter was taken to Tradition Hospital.

MCFR said crews and the HAZMAT team extinguished the fire at around 10:30 p.m. The sheriff’s office said it’s securing the perimeter of the facility and the criminal investigation detectives are prepared to assist now that the situation is controlled. The State Fire Marshal is also present.

No evacuations of the immediate area have been ordered at this time, according to MCSO.
