Firefighters battle house fire in Punta Gorda

A house fire was sending dark smoke into the air in Punta Gorda Isles Monday afternoon. Viewer videos show both smoke and flames billowing out from the roof.

The fire was at a home on Almar Drive. The homeowners made it out of the house without injury.

Neighbors told NBC2 the family had just finished renovations from Hurricane Ian. A Porsche and boat inside the garage were unrecognizable after the flames devoured the house.

The roof is gone, and if you look through a back door, you could see clear to the street. A contractor working across the canal on Whippoorwill Court said he jumped in the water and swam across to check on the family. He didn’t want to go on camera but said that was his gut instinct because his dad died in a fire.

Punta Gorda Fire Department is on the scene along with other agencies. State fire marshals are currently investigating to find out how the fire started.
