Firefighters extinguished a house fire along Saint Charles Street in Fort Myers early Christmas morning.
According to the Fort Myers Fire Department, firefighters responded to a call at 5:41 a.m. on Christmas morning due to a home monitoring system alerting that there was smoke in the home.
Upon arrival, Fort Myers firefighters extinguished the fire and helped bring burnt items out of the home.
NBC2 has learned that the home belongs to L S, a former city councilman. He said that he was in Orlando about to celebrate Christmas with his family, he rushed quickly back to his home after he was alerted.
“I got a call from the alarm company. They said that there the smoke alarm had gone off, so my son rushed me back here,” Simms told NBC2.
S and his wife returned to the house to quickly grab what they could, NBC2 saw items such as furniture, books, bikes even pictures scattered in the driveway. The source of the fire was determined to come from the electrical breaker box in the garage.
“So our crews were able to arrive here very quickly, saw that there was smoke coming from the eaves of the structure, and immediately went to work and actually found that there was actually a fire inside of the garage that actually made its way someone into the home, being able to actually put an aggressive fire stop to be able to knock it down,” said Chief T M.
Despite all the damages left behind, S and his family are trying to stay positive because he knows the home he owned since 1975 isn’t a total loss.
“We did what we could do, we’re not going to have a panic,” S said. “We’re just going to pray and move on. Most things can be replaced.”
FMFD says no injuries were reported from the garage fire.
The house is no longer habitable, and the Red Cross will assist the homeowners with temporary housing.
