Florida couple arrested after baby arrives at hospital in ‘extremely critical condition’: deputies

A Florida man and a woman were accused of neglecting an infant so severely that the child is expected to have serious medical issues for life.

Charlotte County detectives were called to respond to Golisano’s Children’s Hospital in Fort Myers on March 24 in reference to an infant in “extremely critical condition.”

The sheriff’s office said the baby’s injuries included multiple skull fractures, bleeding in the brain, a stroke and more. They were rushed to emergency surgery and are expected to survive, “however, the infant is facing a lengthy recovery and is expected to have significant medical issues for the duration of its life,” a sheriff’s office news release stated.

S M. H, 22, and A M. R, 24, were identified as the couple who brought the infant to the hospital and were responsible for caring for the child at their home in Port Charlotte. Deputies said they provided conflicting explanations of how the injuries occurred and had inconsistent stories.

H told detectives she rolled over onto the infant in her sleep, but hospital staff reported that the story did not explain the child’s injuries.

Detectives said they did not seek medical attention when the infant was injured on March 23. R searched the internet that day for “dent in baby forehead” and “do babies snore?,” according to CCSO.

“As a father, I know there is nothing so precious as the life of a child,” Sheriff Bill Prummel said in a statement. “I ask you to join me in prayer, as this infant fights for survival, that God grants a better life going forward. The individuals who were supposed to be caring for this child have many questions still to answer, and they will be held accountable. In the meantime, my heart is with that child and all who are impacted.”

H and R were arrested and charged with child neglect with great bodily harm. They are being held without bond at the Charlotte County Jail.
