Florida teen took grandmother’s gun, shot into car with 4 people inside, deputies say

An 18-year-old was arrested after he allegedly took his grandmother’s gun and used it to shoot into a car with four people inside on the Fourth of July, deputies said.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office was called to 1062 George Anderson Street in Ormond Beach late Thursday after several shots were fired.

Deputies said Dylan Preis, 18, of Ormond Beach, fired into the vehicle because he had a “recent falling out with the driver” of the car.

Bullet holes in the vehicle revealed that the occupants of the car “narrowly missed” being struck in the head and chest, the sheriff’s office said.

Following the incident, deputies said Preis initially denied having any involvement in the shooting but later confessed to using his grandmother’s 9mm handgun to fire the rounds. The gun, ammunition, and shell casings were recovered at the scene.

The 18-year-old was charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, four counts of firing into a vehicle, and one count of criminal mischief. He also violated his juvenile probation.

He was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he is being held with no bond.
