Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) officials confirmed they responded to Satchel’s Pizza early Sunday morning in response to a vehicle fire.
According to the business’s social media post, someone came in around 8:20 a.m. and started setting off small fires inside the iconic van parked outside the restaurant located on Northeast 23rd Avenue.
The suspect can be seen on surveillance video walking around the restaurant’s front entrance and grabbing and shuffling papers.
GFR district chief told TV20 that the arsonist used napkins and menus as smoldering paper inside the shell of the car outside of the restaurant.
There were small fires in five or six different places in the van, according to the owner, S R.
R told TV20 that the graffiti tags that were put up were fresh and could potentially lead to finding a person of interest.
Police have leads, but names are not able to be shared at this time during the active investigation, according to GFR officials.
Satchel’s staff said the inside of the van is charred, with the lights gone and the ventilation burned up.
R said a Good Samaritan driving by the road saw the van smoking around 8:25 a.m. and poured some water on it trying to put it out.
Restaurant staff say the van will have to be closed down for renovation due to the charred inside and strong smell of smoke.
This is a developing story that will be updated as we learn more information.
