A woman was killed and her grandson injured Wednesday morning in a single-vehicle crash along a two-lane roadway in rural southeast Marion. Here’s what we know about the crash:
Which agency is investigating? Florida Highway Patrol.
What happened? Authorities said an older model Chevy Blazer, driven by a man, was northbound on Southeast 182nd Avenue Road when the vehicle veered off the roadway. The driver managed to get the vehicle back on the roadway when it swerved off the road a second time and into the grassy shoulder.
From there, the vehicle went through a wooden fence and hit a pine tree in a large wooded area.
The driver was transported to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital in serious condition. The sole passenger died.
What’s the relationship between the two? FHP officials said the woman, who’s 67, was the 25-year-old driver’s grandmother. Both are from Ocklawaha.
Where the crash occur? In the 12400 block of Southeast 182nd Avenue Road in Moss Bluff.
Any other first responder on scene? Yes. Marion County Fire Rescue spokesman James Lucas said officials were notified at 10:18 a.m. and arrived at 10:25 a.m. The woman was pronounced deceased at 10:39 a.m.
Was the roadway blocked? Yes, in both directions, so traffic homicide investigators could examine the scene and Medical Examiner’s Office personnel could collect the body and investigate.
How many people have died on the county’s roadways so far this year? Wednesday’s deaths were the 22nd and 23rd for 2024. At this time last year, the number was 20.
