Head-On Crash on SR-39 Leaves One Dead, Another Injured

 A head-on collision Wednesday night on State Road 39 near Varn Road has left one person dead and another injured.

Shortly after 7:30 pm, a Hyundai Tiburon driven by a 56-year-old Zephyrhills man was traveling northbound in the southbound lane for reasons still under investigation. A Dodge Ram towing a trailer, driven by a 30-year-old Babson Park man, was traveling southbound in its designated lane.

Despite attempts by the Dodge Ram driver to avoid the collision, the two vehicles struck nearly head-on. The driver of the Hyundai Tiburon was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Dodge Ram sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating the cause of the crash. Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased driver pending notification of next of kin.
