Two men riding unregistered ATVs have been accused of leading deputies on a high-speed chase through Vero Beach, with children accompanying them.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) said that at 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, a deputy noticed three ATVs at the intersection of Highland Drive SW and Sunset Drive SW without proper registration.
The probable cause affidavit notes that when the deputy attempted to stop two of the vehicles at a red light, both took off at high speed, leading the deputy to a dirt road near a canal, where the patrol car could not follow.
Officials reported that the third ATV, which remained at the intersection, identified the drivers of the fleeing vehicles as AW and Cory Mazziota. Furthermore, he revealed that both drivers were carrying minors on the back of their ATVs.
Another deputy was dispatched to the 11th Lane SW area, where a damaged fence and fresh tire tracks were discovered, per the report.
Additionally, a resident reported seeing the ATVs traveling north with their lights off. Soon after, a third deputy reported locating the two ATVs parked with their doors open on 15th Lane SW. The two men were apprehended nearby and found with two children—a 10-year-old boy with minor injuries and an 11-year-old who was unharmed.
During questioning, W, 31, stated he wasn’t aware that the deputy was attempting to stop them and followed Mazziota, 30, when he took off. The report states W acknowledged crashing into a fence, which caused the 10-year-old, who was asleep, to hit his head on the ATV’s dashboard.
Additionally, W told deputies that they then drove to a friend’s house to hide. When they realized law enforcement was closing in, they surrendered, leaving the children behind.
Both men were arrested and accused of fleeing law enforcement and child abuse without great bodily harm.
