Lake County deputy kills man during investigation into suspicious person

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – A Lake County sheriff’s deputy is on leave after shooting and killing a man early Saturday in the Clermont area.

The sheriff’s office says deputies were responding to a call about a suspicious person standing in the roadway and yelling at passing vehicles in the area of Via Roma Circle, off Lake Louisa Road in the Clermont area.

The individual then allegedly approached a nearby home. Deputies say they received another call that the person was pounding on another resident’s door.

When deputies arrived, they say the individual, identified as 39-year-old Eric Escobar, refused to show his hands when commanded to do so.

When he finally did, deputies say Escobar showed a handgun. That’s when a deputy fired his weapon.

Escobar was declared dead at the crime scene.

No one else was hurt.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
