A man who is accused in a Jacksonville hit-and-run crash that killed a 15-year-old on Interstate 95 early this month was arrested in Central Florida.
According to FHP, Gerlin Adali Garcia Mendez caused the fatal crash on Oct. 13 on I-95 near J. Turner Butler Blvd and after the collision, he ran off.
He was arrested in the Orlando area by FHP investigators and now faces multiple felony and criminal charges.
“FHP is committed to removing these hazardous drivers from our roadways and holding criminals accountable for their actions,” FHP said in a social media post.
According to the crash report, the 15-year-old was driving a black Toyota Tacoma north on I-95 with a 16-year-old passenger beside them around 9 p.m.
FHP said the truck was then hit from behind by a white Honda Civic, which caused the Tacoma to roll over and injure the 15-year-old, who later died from his injuries at the hospital.
Neither teen was wearing a seat belt nor was the vehicle’s passenger injured, FHP said.
