Police arrested an 18-year-old man Tuesday for allegedly groping a 72-year-old woman while she was taking a walk in her Cape Coral neighborhood.
Angela Johnson said she was walking down NE 8th Place near Durden Parkway on Memorial Day morning when a group of construction workers started catcalling her.
“They were hooting and hollering at me and I ignored them, walked past,” Johnson said. “I walked maybe a block and a half more, and all of a sudden, I felt somebody grab my left buttocks and squeeze it hard. And I jumped back, and I looked at them, and I said, ‘I’m going to report you.’ And the person sort of laughed and ran off and said, ‘Go ahead, report it.'”
Johnson said she sprinted home to her husband, who called 911, and Cape Coral police started investigating.
Luis Esteban Duarte Garcia was taken to the Lee County Jail and charged with battery on a person over 65 years of age.
Johnson had a message for other women:
“Always be aware of your surroundings, number one. Do not have headsets on. I didn’t even hear him run up and have some protection with you and maybe a partner or somebody to walk with,” Johnson said.
Neighbors said they spotted a man who looked similar to Garcia getting arrested near a construction site in the neighborhood early Tuesday morning.
