Man arrested, 2 injured after DUI crash involving 5 vehicles in Santa Rosa County

A 20-year-old man was arrested after troopers say he caused a five-car crash by driving at a high rate of speed while under the influence in Santa Rosa County on Sunday afternoon.

The crash happened at the intersection of Edgewood Drive and Bellingham Street at around 5:20 p.m.

Florida Highway Patrol says 20-year-old Walter Gomez was traveling northbound on Edgewood Drive at a high rate of speed, running a stop sign and colliding with the rear of a van.

Gomez’s vehicle then recoiled off the van and collided with the front of a SUV, according to a release.

Troopers say the van then entered the yard area of 6594 Bellingham Street and collided with two parked vehicles in the driveway of the home.

A passenger of the van was seriously injured from the crash, causing his leg to nearly require amputation, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Another occupant of the vehicle was flown to the hospital due to glass being lodged in his neck, according to a release. He is listed in critical condition.

Gomez allegedly fled the scene on foot, but was located and arrested about a mile away from the scene.

Gomez is charged with DUI, driving without a license, and leaving the scene of a crash. He was booked into the Santa Rosa County Jail on Sunday. He is held on $150,000 bond.

Gomez was also cited for careless driving and failing to obey a stop sign.
