Man dies in Jacksonville house fire possibly caused by heater

A man died in a Jacksonville house fire on Sunday morning, according to his family.

The Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department responded to the fire on Pipit Avenue around 8:15 a.m.

Officials said the man was taken to the hospital in critical condition but his son confirmed that he died. There was no one else in the house.

JFRD said the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Bureau of Fire, Arson & Explosives Investigations, but there is suspicion that a heater could be the cause.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) during colder months, heating equipment is the leading cause of home fires.

JFRD said smoke detectors are critical because they can warn people of a fire intime to escape.

The city of Jacksonville has a program where it provides and installs free smoke detectors for any qualifying Jacksonville resident.

JFRD will also install replacement batteries in existing smoke detectors for free.

Just call 640-CITY (2489) for the free smoke detector or to have the batteries replaced.

JFRD also gave safety tips regarding space heaters by making sure your space heater is:

  • In good working condition.
  • Make sure it’s placed in a location where it’s not near anything, like bedding that could catch fire.
  • Don’t plug it into small extension cords.
  • It needs to be on firm ground so it’s not knocked over.
  • And don’t leave them unattended.
