Man shot and killed by deputies after chase ends near Tri-Rail in Fort Lauderdale

A man was shot and killed by deputies following a chase that ended near the Tri-Rail station in For Lauderdale Saturday, the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

The shooting happened off West Broward Boulevard next to I-95.

BSO said at 1:49 p.m. they got a call about a domestic issue at a home in the county. They also had information someone at the home had a gun. Investigators say the armed man fled the scene prior to deputies arriving at the home.

BSO said their deputies chased the man and deputies were forced to shoot him near Southwest First Street and Southwest 21st.

Police said the man who was shot died at the scene. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.

Several deputies fired their weapons and are now on administrative assignment pending the investigation.

“The circumstances of the specific encounter are under investigation,” BSO spokesperson C C said.

People who live near the train station are reminded of another deadly shooting that happened a few days earlier less than a mile away. That one involved Fort Lauderdale Police.

Fort Lauderdale Police says 21-year-old J M came out of his home holding a family member hostage at gunpoint and officers shot him Wednesday. Police say he was having a mental health crisis.

C Mc lives between where both shootings happened. The most recent was a few yards from her backyard.

“Again, directly behind my house,” Mc said. “It’s scary, because we just had a shooting happened on the other side of our neighborhood.”

Mc, like many of her neighbors, is feeling uneasy.

“I’m a single mom and I have girls and it’s crazy that this is happening,” Mc said.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s shooting caused a bit of a disruption to service on the Tri-Rail.

Hours after the shooting, deputies said passengers were allowed to exit the train, but no one was allowed to board the train.
