Motorcyclist dead, passenger hospitalized in Manatee County crash

A motorcyclist has died and his passenger was seriously injured during a Friday night crash on a popular Manatee County road.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 64-year-old Bradenton man driving a van was heading westbound on Cortez Road, approaching 51st Street West.

At the same time, a 28-year-old Virginia man and his 27-year-old female passenger were heading eastbound on Cortez Road, approaching the same intersection.

As the pair were going through the intersection, the driver of the van went to make a left turn. FHP said the front of the van collided with the front of the motorcycle.

As a result, the motorcycle flipped, and the man was ejected from the bike. It is unclear if the woman was ejected, too.

Both the motorcyclist and his passenger were seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital. Sadly, the man died shortly after.

The crash remains under investigation.
