Motorcyclist dies after crash in Jacksonville’s Edgewood area

A motorcyclist is dead after a crash in the Edgewood area Monday evening, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police said the crash happened around 5:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Cassat Avenue and involved a motorcycle and a Toyota Prius.

JSO said the Prius was southbound on Casset Avenue attempting to make a left turn and pulled in front of a motorcyclist traveling northbound, causing the crash.

JSO Sergent Hungerford said the motorcyclist, a man in his late 20s, was thrown from the vehicle and landed on the concrete.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded and took the man to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Prius was also taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, police said.

Hungerford said investigators believe speed played a factor in the crash.

“Speed is going to be a factor,” said Hungerford, “based on the wreckage.”

Police said a helmet was located at the scene and investigators believe the rider was wearing it at the time of the crash.

JSO detectives are interviewing witnesses and will survey video of the crash.

This crash marks the 74th traffic fatality in Duval County this year alone, and the 13th involving a motorcyclist, according to Hungerford.

“If you are riding a motorcycle, just use caution. You want to be very careful and look far ahead,” Hungerford said.

He emphasized that JSO offers a free motorcycle training course for anyone who wants to learn how to ride safely on the road.

“Come on out there, and you’ll learn from some of the best motorcycle riders in Jacksonville, and they’ll teach you how to be safe and defensive,” Hungerford said.

JSO said Cassatt Avenue at Phyllis Street was blocked for hours as detectives conducted their investigation.
