Naples man in coma after scooter crash, family holds out hope

Angel Diaz, 24, was found just a few houses down from where he lives, lying in the middle of the road, bleeding from his head.

His sister, Yasumy Diaz, is praying for her brother’s recovery. Angel Diaz is currently in a coma after an incident last Wednesday night when he was riding his electric scooter to meet a friend.

His roommate, Stefanie Funk, found him unresponsive on 107th Avenue in Naples Park. “I was approaching and I saw debris on the road and I saw something, it looked like an accident. And then I immediately called 911. And when my son and I realized who it was, you know, I tried to keep my son calm, and I said, ‘It’s Angel, and we have to call an ambulance right away,’” Funk said.

Naples Park, according to Funk, is notorious for people speeding and running stop signs. “I’ve been living in this neighborhood for six years, the community is concerned really, truly. We stand out here and everybody is going double the speed limit all the time. And, you know, forget about stop signs. Nobody stops,” she said.

Angel Diaz suffered a traumatic brain injury and has undergone multiple surgeries. He has several skull fractures and is now relying on a ventilator to breathe. His brain continues to swell, and doctors have warned the family that if or when he wakes up, they should expect him to have impairments.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and looking for any surveillance footage from that night. Authorities are still working to determine whether Angel Diaz was hit by a car or if he fell off his scooter. Funk mentioned that they are trying to see if any cars were on or off the block between 9 and 9:40 p.m. to figure out if this was an intentional act or an accident.

Yasumy Diaz shared that he is very close to his family, and they are now trying to bring their mother from Venezuela so she can see her son.
