A pilot was hospitalized on Saturday evening after crashing his plane at Ocala International Airport.
At around 7:50 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, Ocala Fire Rescue units were dispatched to the Ocala International Airport (1770 SW 60th Avenue) after a pilot reported in a distress call that his plane had crashed, according to OFR.
Upon arrival, OFR crews observed an experimental aircraft that had crashed near trees, just outside of the airport’s fence line.
OFR stated that the pilot and sole occupant of the plane was alert when crews arrived on scene. However, he was unable to exit the plane “due to its precarious position and the surrounding trees.”
Since the plane was in a “challenging offroad location,” OFR crews used a smaller vehicle to reach the plane. The pilot was then assessed by emergency personnel before being carefully helped out of the wreckage.
The pilot was then transported to a local hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. His name and age were not released by OFR.
The Ocala Police Department and Marion County Fire Rescue also responded to the scene of the plane crash, along with airport personnel.
In addition, the Federal Aviation Administration and the State Warning Point were notified.
