Police believe man killed in hit-and-run on Moncrief Road; shell casing found at scene

A man is dead after a hit-and-run on Moncrief Road early Monday morning, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

JSO responded to a call about a man dead on the side of the road just after 4 a.m. Monday.

“We do have video surveillance. It does appear that he may have been struck by a vehicle based on looking at him, but we don’t know much else right now,” said Sgt. Robert Hungerford with the JSO Traffic Homicide Unit.

JSO also said a shell casing was found by the body, but it is unclear right now if that casing landed there during the hit-and-run or was already in the roadway.

“It’s also possible he was crossing the street near the shell casing that happened to be in the road. It could have been in his pocket. We don’t know yet, but it does appear he was struck by a vehicle,” Hungerford said.

The JSO Traffic Homicide Unit and the JSO Homicide Unit are jointly investigating the incident.

Officials encourage anyone with information to call First Coast Crime Stoppers at 866-845-8477.
