Puppy dies after being left in outside cage; Fort Myers man arrested

Lee County deputies arrested a Fort Myers man accused of leaving his dog outside for multiple days in a kennel.

Deputies responded to a south Fort Myers home in the Pine Manor neighborhood on Third Avenue to investigate an animal cruelty case.

A neighbor told deputies they found an unconscious chihuahua puppy on the side of the road on Fifth Avenue.

Deputies and EMS helped aid the puppy on the scene, but it reportedly died.

Detectives learned the puppy’s owner was Thomas Byers, 65, who was reportedly leaving the dog outside for multiple days in a kennel without food or water.

Witnesses told detectives Byers noticed the dog was acting abnormal and left the residence with it.

Byers was located at his home on Third Avenue, where a second Chihuahua was found in a kennel outside.

The second puppy was taken into custody and Byers was reportedly arrested for two counts of animal cruelty.

“Leaving animals outside in the heat with 𝐧𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 is sickening,” said Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “I won’t tolerate this kind of abuse and will make certain this man never owns an animal again.”
