Sanford teen killed after crashing into tree in Volusia County

A 17-year-old is dead after the Florida Highway Patrol says he lost control of his car in Volusia County.

According to a report from FHP, the driver, who is from Sanford, was traveling eastbound on Reed Ellis Road approaching State Road 415 around 10 p.m. on Tuesday. FHP says the teen was traveling above the posted speed limit, which caused him to lose control of his vehicle and run off the road.

After exiting the roadway, FHP says the vehicle struck a tree.

The teen was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced deceased.

This crash remains under investigation.
