An 82-year-old Gainesville man and 80-year-old Gainesville woman in a minivan died after pulling out in front of a tractor-trailer on US Highway 301 north of Waldo on Friday afternoon.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) release, an 82-year-old Gainesville man was driving a minivan when he entered the southbound lanes of US 301 at 12:35 p.m. from the stop sign at County Road 225 and was struck by a tractor-trailer driven by a 45-year-old Ocala man traveling southbound in the inside lane.
According to an Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) release, units from ACFR and Melrose Fire Rescue were dispatched to the accident. Emergency responders from Bradford County were on scene when ACFR arrived. One of the minivan passengers was entrapped in the vehicle and was extracted within 10 minutes.
Both the minivan driver and passenger were transported to UF Shands Hospital in Gainesville where they were pronounced dead.
The tractor-trailer driver was not injured, according to both releases.
