A sergeant with Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue has been cited after they “accidentally struck” two women sunbathing on the beach on Memorial Day, according to officials.
The two 18-year-olds, who were visiting from Kissimmee, were lying on the sand west of the emergency lane in the 400 block North in Daytona Beach when they were struck around 2:30 p.m.
According to Tamra Malphurs, interim director with Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue, the women were taken to the hospital and are currently listed in stable condition.
The unnamed sergeant was cited for careless driving and disciplinary action will be determined after officials have reviewed all the facts, according to Malphurs.
The Volusia Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation.
