A 27-year-old SUV driver was hospitalized after a crash with a semi-truck Monday afternoon in Escambia County.
The crash happened around 12:40 p.m. at the intersection of N. Blue Angel Parkway and Mobile Highway.
Florida Highway Patrol states an SUV was stopped due to a flashing red signal, while a semi-truck was approaching. A pickup truck pulling a trailer was also stopped at the intersection.
“The signal for SR-173 had a flashing yellow light and the signal for US90 had a flashing red signal, due to the weather,” FHP states in its release.
The SUV attempted to cross the intersection while the semi-truck was entering the intersection, resulting in an angled collision, according to FHP. After the collision, the semi collided with the pickup truck pulling a trailer.
According to Escambia County Fire Rescue, units arrived to find the SUV driver — a 27-year-old Loxley, Alabama woman — trapped in her vehicle.
“ECFR rapidly worked to extricate the driver from the SUV using hydraulic tools to fully open the side of the vehicle,” Escambia County Fire Rescue says in a release.
The driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to FHP. No other people involved were injured.
FHP says following the crash, the semi-truck leaked oil and fuel in the intersection. Webber and Department of Energy were called to scene to help facilitate clean up of the roadway. FHP and Escambia County Sheriff’s Office blocked the intersection until the clean-up was finished.
The roadway was reopened at 6:40 p.m.
