Tampa teen killed in crash after swerving to avoid oncoming car

A 17-year-old Tampa boy was killed Thursday night in a crash on US-41 in Pasco County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said at 10:56 p.m., the teenager and a 16-year-old female passenger were heading south on the highway when someone in the northbound lanes crossed into their lane to pass traffic.

The 17-year-old swerved into the shoulder to avoid hitting the oncoming car, a Honda Civic driven by a 45-year-old Spring Hill man.

However, the teenager ended up hitting a concrete culvert, causing his car to flip multiple times and eject him from his seat. He died at the scene.

The 16-year-old survived but suffered serious injuries, troopers said.
