St. Petersburg police are investigating a targeted shooting that sent two men to the hospital.
Just before the gunfire rang out, city leaders were holding an anti-violence meeting at nearby Jordan Park in response to an uptick in gun violence.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the shooting occurred at 2400 13th Avenue South.
“The victims were sitting on the porch,” police Chief A H said. “Someone came by and there was some gunfire exchange.”
Police said two 19-year-old men were taken to the hospital but are expected to be ok.
H believes they were targeted.
“We will recover those casings and will compare those to other casings we find through the city to see if there’s a comparison that they’re similar to other shootings that are happening in our city,” the chief said.
Councilman-elect C G Jr. was at the earlier meeting and reacted to the news of the shooting nearby.
“Less than an hour later, two blocks down, the road shots rang out in the middle of broad daylight,” G said. “People should feel safe where they live and where they work. You should be able to take out your trash, walk your child to school, go to the store without fearing for your life.”
G said something needs to be done to help neighbors that feel hostage in their own community.
“It’s simple, lock your cars. Lock these guns up,” G said. “We got to practice responsible gun ownership.”
G also said the youth need access to more opportunities.
“We don’t have to resort to guns to solve our problems,” G said. “Words, that’s what we have to learn how to use. I think it’s important to get kids to understand that there are opportunities, and they have access to those opportunities.”
St. Petersburg police are not releasing information about possible suspects.
