‘The car disintegrated’: Driver dead after SUV hit tree, burst into flames on Jacksonville’s Westside

A driver died in a single-vehicle crash on Jacksonville’s Westside early Tuesday morning after the SUV they were driving, went off the road and crashed into a tree before bursting into flames, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

JSO Sergeant Hungerford told First Coast News the crash happened around 1:33 a.m. in the 5800 block of Highway Avenue. He said the driver, who was in a “newer model” Nissan Pathfinder, was traveling westbound when they “failed to negotiate the curve, went off the roadway to the right, or to the northside of the road, struck a Pine tree and caught on fire.”

Firefighters with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department then responded, according to H, extinguished the fire, and pronounced the driver dead on scene.

H said the sheriff’s office does not yet know the identity of the driver, including an approximate age and gender, because the vehicle caught fire.

When asked how many people were in the vehicle, H said: “That’s a good question, it looks like one. The vehicle did catch on fire, and we are still working through that.”

The sergeant also said the sheriff’s office will await results from the Medical Examiner’s Office in determining whether the driver was impaired when the crash happened.

“He was probably… probably doing about six, or something like that,” Hungerford said. “He was moving. Speed is probably going to be a contributing factor. The Pine tree has significant damage to it. The car, disintegrated. It’s been raining off and on for the last day, so the road was definitely wet, and that probably had some sort of a factor.”

This is the 5th traffic fatality in Duval County this year, according to JSO.
