Troopers: 1 killed, 3 seriously injured in Merritt Island crash involving car, tractor-trailer

An investigation continues into a fatal Friday crash in the eastbound lanes of State Road 528 on Merritt Island.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Saturday that a 20-year-old Merritt Island woman died in the 5:54 p.m. accident, which involved a 2005 Infinti G35 and a 2020 Kenworth tractor-trailer, both traveling in the left lane.

The driver of the Infiniti, which was behind the tractor-trailer, lost control of his vehicle just east of Courtenay Parkway, troopers said, running left off the roadway and onto the shoulder. The vehicle then rotated clockwise back onto the road and into the direct path of the tractor-trailer, causing the car to overturn onto the right shoulder.

The woman was ejected from the Infiniti and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 21-year-old Cocoa man, and two male passengers, a 21-year-old Cocoa man, and a 17-year-old from Titusville, were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne with serious injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 50-year-old Merritt Island man, was not transported, troopers said, and remained on scene.
