A Canadian arrested on state charges after police said he attacked passengers and Transportation Security Administration officers at Miami International Airport over the weekend could wind up in more trouble.
C D M, 28, will likely face federal charges, according to a TSA statement sent to Local 10 News on Tuesday.
The agency “is working with law enforcement and will pursue independent enforcement actions” against the Toronto man for attacking two of its officers on Saturday morning, it says.
“This unprovoked and brash physical attack against our employees is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the statement reads.
According to Miami-Dade police, the rampage began with a random attack on a man walking to his gate at around 6:45 a.m.
Police said that the victim later told officers that M never said anything to him and “just walked up on him and started punching him.”
M then began punching another man who tried breaking up the fight, an arrest report states.
One of the victims was a senior, police said. The report states that while there was no indication of alcohol intoxication, it was unknown whether M was under the influence of drugs.
ABC News reports, citing the TSA, that M had also been involved in an “in-flight disturbance” the day prior that “caused the plane on which he was traveling to divert back to Miami.”
Additional details about that incident weren’t immediately disclosed. TSA officials told ABC News that just before Saturday’s incident, M had gone through its screening process “with no anomalies.”
M’s name was not yet listed in federal court records as of Tuesday. He was, however, still listed in Miami-Dade jail records, which indicate that he remained behind bars at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
He’s being held at TGK on a $4,000 bond on three state counts of battery on an officer, one count of battery on person over 65 and a misdemeanor battery charge, those records show.
Local 10 News has contacted M’s listed attorney seeking comment on his arrest.
